Microsoft 365 Multi-Factor Authentication Setup Guide

 

Multi-factor authentication can reduce the risk of password leaks.

 

 *Starting October 2025, multi-factor authentication will be required when logging into Microsoft 365.

You will not be able to log in if multi-factor authentication is not set up, so please configure it yourself.

 



The following methods can be used for multi-factor authentication.

Authentication Method Explanation Available users
Microsoft Authenticator MFA

Authenticate using the Microsoft Authenticator app for iOS/Android student、Faculty and staff
Passwort(FIDO2 Security Key) FIDO2-compliant hardware keys (such as YubiKey) student、Faculty and staff
Passwort(Microsoft Authenticator) Passkeys stored on your smartphone student、Faculty and staff


This guide explains how to install and use the Microsoft Authenticator app on your iOS or Android smartphone.





① Open the Microsoft account page

From a PC web browser

https://aka.ms/mfasetup

Access and sign in.

If you are already signed in, authentication will be skipped and you will proceed to step ②.



。In the Microsoft sign-in dialog,

 User ID @sic.shibaura-it.ac.jp

Press “Next”.




The ADFS sign-in screen will appear.

Please sign in with your Center for Science Information account.


After successfully signing in, the security information page titled “My Sign-In” will appear.


If you see any authentication methods you have never used—such as a phone number or software token—registered as a sign-in method on this screen, this may indicate unauthorized use. Without deleting the registered information, please contact the Information Innovation Division immediately.



②Add a sign-in method

Click “Add sign-in method”

 

A screen for selecting your sign-in method will appear.

If you select “Microsoft Authenticator” (not “Microsoft Authenticator Passkey”),

 

you will be prompted to download the app.

 


 

③ Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone




For iOS, install the Microsoft Authenticator app from the App Store.




For Android, install the Microsoft Authenticator app from the Google Play Store.



④ For Android, install the Microsoft Authenticator app from the Google Play Store.

Press Skip.

 

Tap “Add Account”
(If you already have another account registered, tap the “+” in the upper right corner.)


Tap “Work or school account”

 

Tap “Scan QR Code”.

 


 

⑤ Scan the QR code to register

Return to the PC screen and press “Next” on the app acquisition screen.


Click “Next” in Account Settings.


A QR code will be displayed.


Scan the QR code using the Microsoft Authenticator app.

When you scan, a confirmation prompt will appear asking for permission to send notifications. Press “Allow.”


Your smartphone registration is now complete. PC
 


return to your web browser and click “Next.”


A two-digit number will appear on the “Try It” screen, and a notification will be sent to your smartphone.



Enter the two-digit number displayed in your PC's web browser into the Microsoft Authenticator screen on your smartphone, then press “Yes.”

 

Microsoft Authenticator has been registered to your Microsoft account. Click Next.


If “Microsoft Authenticator” is listed under “Security Information,” registration is complete.

⑦If you change your smartphone

When changing your smartphone model, you must register the new smartphone with Microsoft Authenticator.

Connect your previous device to the network via Wi-Fi or other means, then use Step 1 to register the new device.

If your previous device is unavailable, it will require separate reconfiguration. Please contact the Information Innovation Division.
